Orpen's Skull

At the Slade School of art Henry Tonks taught Orpen to focus upon anatomy as a route to perfecting drawings of the human form.

Here, in a departure from her normal clinical subject matter, Orpen has produced a finely detailed lateral-view study of a skull. The proportions, contour shading and representation of joints between bones (the sutures) are notable.
