Explore the Operating Theatre

The operating theatre, is where Plastic Surgeons truly make a difference to their patient’s lives.

In this gallery you can explore the variety instruments, equipment and devices which have been used during plastic surgery procedures through time. We will explain and demonstrate the context within which they were used and their historical significance. Whilst most are unique to the plastic surgery operating room environment, others are also used by a vareity of surgical specialties.

What is in the Collection?

The BAPRAS Collection holds artefacts starting from the late 19th cetury and features a wide range of both historic, and more contemporary instruments, equipment and devices which define plastic surgery. Some of our artefacts are truly unique, and significant to the history of surgery. BAPRAS holds many instruments and artefacts associated with Sir Harold Gillies, usually regarded as the founding father of British Plastic Surgery, together with rhinoplasty surgery German pioneer, Jacques Joseph. Many instruments carry the initials of these and other surgeons formative to the specialty, while some are prototype designs. The collection continues to grow, expanding to encompass areas such as the history of British Microsurgery.
