It is widely recognised that conflict has been a catalyst for the development and progress of plastic surgery. 

The First World War saw the dawn of organised plastic surgery in Britain. This became a model for much of the rest of the world. The injuries recieved in warfare from bomb, bullet, blast and burn are uniquely suited to the removal of dead tissue and reconstruction with new that is the forte of the plastic surgeon. Today the plastic surgeon is a vital part of the receiveing medical team in any conflict.
