Nurses

Nursing staff have always played a vital and complementary role in plastic surgery.

Whilst integral to managing the day-to-day needs and personal care of patients, nurses working in plastic surgery are specialists in complex wound and dressings management as well as the intensive care of burns patients and post-operative monitoring of sophisticated reconstructions . Their input can make the difference between success and failure.

At the inception of British Plastic Surgery, Harold Gillies not only pioneered new surgical procedures but also recognised the importance of rehabilitation.  Plastic Surgery nurses  have always played an important part in this physical and psychological  rehabilitation. Today their role is developing, some performing direct care and procedures.

Here we explore the history and role development of nursing staff working in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
