Home Collections Kanchenjunga, India Kanchenjunga, India This oil on board painting by Sir Harold Gillies depicts sunrise on Kanchenjunga. The third highest mountain in the world at 8,586 m, sits in the Northeast Indian Himalaya on the border between Sikkim State and Nepal. Arguably one of his better works, this painting is from a trip Gillies made to India in 1957. He visited Darjeeling in early January 1958 and presumably painted this work from there. Its frame bears a sticker with the number “98”, suggesting that it was at some stage exhibited.
