Home Collections Tonks Illustration Case 4 Tonks Illustration Case 4 This Private in the 2nd Lincoln Regiment lost his nose, left eye and eyelid to a gunshot. There was great tissue destruction. The two images here depict a series of Tonks drawings in pencil, overlain later by inks in red and black. He has also appended written details of the date, surgeon and his interpretation of the procedure. The patient endured many procedures, some of which failed due to tissue necrosis (dying), scar contracture, and infection. All the operations before the last illustrated of 21.9.17, were deemed “unsuccessful”. By January 2018, the whole result was said to be “unsatisfactory” and he was discharged, to be re-admitted two years later when a new reconstructive plan was commenced.
