Rowan Pritchard Jones

Rowan is a Consultant and Honorary Clinical Professor in plastic surgery at the Universities of Liverpool and Edge Hill. His major subspecialty interest is skin cancer, but he is an innovator, driving and leading primary research in Plastic Surgery on behalf of BAPRAS. He has served in various positions on BAPRAS Council and is currently Medical Director of Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Partnership.

Rowan is typical of many plastic surgeons who possess not only great surgical skills, but a talent for art, which is manifest by various means. Whilst incorporating an artistic element into the surgical restoration of human form, he documents his operative procedures with illustrations. He also produces art in a range of media for its own sake.

He is perhaps best known artistically for the exquisite casts of plastic surgeon’s hands, presented actually holding and demonstrating the use of genuine surgical instruments. Produced in collaboration with Consultant Prosthetist Jane McPhail, these sculptures were inspired by a visit when still a Registrar to one of the very few departments of medical art, at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.
