James Henderson

James is a Consultant plastic surgeon in Bristol with a major subspecialty interest in hand surgery. He only started drawing in pencil in around 2019 when a spinal surgical procedure stopped him doing sport. 

He continues to work in pencil, but for more “professional” pieces employs the digital “Procreate” platform on a tablet computer. His subject matter ranges from anatomical studies used for teaching and training, to images of surgical instruments, still life, landscapes and portraiture. Many of his works comprise quirky re-imaginings of more famous images, some achieved on post-operative note paper between cases. James’s pieces have become widely distributed by virtue of commissions for colleagues and medical associations, together with a book cover.
