Donald Sammut

Donald Sammut is a Plastic surgeon whose subspecialty and entire clinical practice is in hand surgery. His particular skills are in the reconstruction of nerves, tendons and thus global hand function which trauma, degenerative conditions and paralysis have damaged. He currently runs an independent practice based in Bath and London, but also holds Honorary NHS Consultant posts in Derby and Coventry, whilst teaching, lecturing and examining the next generation of hand surgeons.

He is well known within plastic and hand surgery as an artist and illustrator, with a diverse portfolio of both medical and non-medical art. Working mainly in ink and watercolour, he has produced many illustrations for teaching purposes focussed upon anatomy, pathology and patient examination, as well as commissioned illustrative hand and plastic surgery-themed works for publications produced by both BAPRAS and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand. Not limited by this, he has also illustrated the covers of several books, notably a series of poems by Louis De Bernières, and creates artistic works for their own sake.

His illustrations recording operative interventions within the patient notes are extremely detailed, rarely seen, and comparable to works produced by the historic artists of record like Orpen and Lentiagne. They can be seen [Here].

In this gallery we present an eclectic selection of his general work.
